Breast Centre Appeal
Opened in October 2010 by our patron, Julien Macdonald OBE, the Breast Centre at Llandough Hospital offers patients from Cardiff and the Vale a chance to be treated at one location. We also provide care to individuals that have been referred for specialist treatment from all across Wales.
The fantastic facility at The Breast Centre ensures that out-patient clinics and diagnostic radiology services are housed together and located close to the ward and operating facilities. This ensures that more patients can be treated with day-case procedures, reducing the need for a stay in hospital. The centre enables patients to have a mammogram or ultrasound and get the results on the same day. Where further investigations are needed these can also be carried out at the centre.
Our breast centre staff see around 250 patients each week. Around 450-500 new breast cancer patients are seen each year with the rest of appointments made up of extra investigations, follow-up treatment and those returning for results. Having everything under one roof means a much more streamlined service for patients that is easy to understand –most important at a time when patients may be very anxious.
Our centre is based around the needs of the patient, there is an early discharge lounge so that patients can wait in comfort rather than lie needlessly in beds. A private corridor was built into the design of the centre so that upset patients can leave the building in privacy away from those in the waiting areas.
Mr Summit Goyal, Consultant Breast Surgeon at the Breast Centre explains, "the new centre allows us to continue delivering our excellent care in an environment tailored to patient needs."
Why further money is needed?
An opportunity exists to convert part of the centre, currently a shell space, into a multi-purpose centre for patients and medical staff.
Our vision is to provide a complete support package for patients through holistic training, complimentary therapy and a tailored post-surgery exercise programme. The emotional health of our patients is just as important to us as their physical well-being. We pride ourselves on taking a holistic approach to the people that need us.
The centre will also be used as a training centre for medical staff so that we can grow the number of people with specialist skills in the treatment of breast cancer. This will ensure that the Cardiff and Vale Breast Centre can continue to provide first class and innovative treatment and therapy to our patients.
State-of-the-art equipment such as a 3D mammogram machine, liposuction and lip modelling equipment is needed to ensure that patients continue receiving world-class treatment. Please help us to provide the best equipment available to those with breast cancer.
